A wayfinding system should start with the largest (general information) and go to the smallest (destination information). So, we start with directories and finish with space identification signage. The following sign types make up denSert.
Directories
Directories can be placed in entry lobbies or elevator lobbies. They typically will list the departments or general destinations on each floor. In smaller facilities they may list all of the destinations on each floor (eg. a list of doctors and room numbers in a medical building). Depending upon size, these can either be printed paper or digitally printed on thin styrene.
Directional Signs
Directional signs are placed at decision points. This may be on the wall opposite the elevator to indicate what destinations are in each direction. Or they could be at hallway intersections. Directional signs can either be wall-mounted, suspended or projecting.
Area Signs
Area signs identify a space, such as a department, ticket counter, reception, information, waiting room and cafeteria. They can be wall-mounted, suspended or projecting.
Room Signs
Room signs identify final destinations such as offices, patient rooms, guest rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms, washrooms, utility rooms and special use rooms. Room signs are generally best placed on the wall on the latch side of the door, rather than on the door itself. The exceptions are washrooms, utility rooms and stairwell doors.
Workstation Signs
denSert signs can be adapted through the use of acrylic hangers, Velcro or double-sided tape to identify workstations in an open office environment.
Utility Signs
Utility signs identify spaces or rooms that will be unlikely to have a change of use (such as washrooms, electrical rooms, storage rooms and maintenance rooms. These signs are basic signs rather than insert signs.
Countertop Signs
These signs are freestanding for use on counter or tabletops identifying people or functions. They can be either basic or insert signs.
